Project Description:
This proposal helped to re-inspire ideas for the 719 block of Indiana Avenue, just north of the Madam Walker Center and at the heart of Indianapolis' historic Black neighborhood. Decades of institutional urban renewal and blight clearance left a prosperous corridor full of jazz clubs, cafes, and shops nothing but miles of empty parking lots. In early 2020, a local developer proposed new housing on the 719 block to cater to IUPUI students but ignored the Avenue's history and architectural past. The plan looks to the past to honor Black excellence with this strategic high-level ideations of how development should be shaped along the block for generations to come.
